Vaccine Training / Intramuscular Injection Review

Washington optometric physicians have an exciting opportunity to contribute to the state's efforts to vaccinate Washington's residents and stem the tide of COVID-19 transmission.  As the vaccination campaign continues in the coming months, the Governor's office and the Department of Health are concerned that we will begin to see burnout among the volunteers administering vaccines. Thanks to the recently signed PREPs Act, and approved by the Washington Department of Health, interested ODs can help keep the vaccination campaign on track by volunteering to administer vaccines. Those looking to serve as vaccination volunteers must first comply with CDC requirements, including receiving refresher training on intramuscular injections.

To make it convenient and efficient for our members to obtain refresher training, OPW is teaming up with Northwest Eye Surgeons (NWES) and Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute (PCLI) to offer a free, one-hour training program at locations across the state.  Participants will need to complete the CDC's online training course before arriving, and should bring a volunteer with them to receive their training injections.  Our initial schedule for these training events is shown below, but the schedule may be adjusted based on demand.  Check via the registration link for the latest schedule. Thank you for your interest in joining our profession's latest effort to contribute to the fight against COVID-19.

This optional course will be a no cost skills IM injection refresher workshop for ODs who are interested in performing COVID-19 vaccinations.

One hour of non-COPE CE will be earned with IM verification certificate.  This is not intended for someone who just wants an hour of CE credit.

Prior to scheduling an appointment, we require that ODs:

  • Complete the CDC online certification (CDC course)
  • Understand that a valid, unexpired CPR certification (Red Cross) is required to perform immunizations
  • Arrive at their training with either another OD or other volunteer on which to perform an IM injection of saline.  Injection partners will not be provided by the teaching site

Following skills refresher course it is recommended each attendee pair with a mentor to have further observation on their first day at a vaccination site.

You can register as a volunteer vaccinator here.

Courses will be offered on various dates through out April and early May at various locations around the state including:
